博比(柯林·法瑞爾飾)與喬納森(達拉斯·羅伯茨飾)是兒時的親密伙伴。于喬納森而言，背離傳統的博比是通往廣闊天空的紐帶，不可或缺的精神支柱；而對博比來說，喬納森的家庭，特別是喬納森的母親艾麗斯(希茜·斯派塞克飾)那暗示著家庭溫暖與和諧的親切感，使他醺醺然般陶醉其中。

　　少年不知愁滋味的日子匆匆過去，兩人也由于各自的原因分別了許久。若乾年后的紐約城，兩位摯友有幸再次重逢了。他鄉故知的喜悅使彼此欣喜若狂，博比隨即搬到了喬納森家中。本來是為友誼而來的博比突然發現自己竟然愛上了喬納森的室友、性感而又舉止古怪的女孩兒克萊爾(羅賓·賴特·潘飾)。友情愛情孰輕孰重，于是，他們發明了一種別具一格、絕對精神化的家庭模式，向以往的傳統發起了挑戰。

　　《天涯家園》包含著家庭生活類影片中愛情、責任、忠誠等可貴元素，而實際上，它更加著重借助膠片定格了一種新式家庭的傾向性，一種向傳統倫理道德發難的生活模式，也是一種需要審慎定義的全新概念。

電影音樂特別找來創作才子Duncan Sheik根據故事背景，創作出5首全新作品，其中包括3首演奏曲。此外，還加入了橫跨60-80年代，如Jefferson Airplane、Dusty Springfield、Patti Smith、YAZ等藝人的經典代表作。

獨立型民謠歌手Duncan Sheik自1996年發表了他第一張同名專輯后，逐漸轉向電影原聲的歌手使他小有名氣。現年33歲的他來自美國北卡羅來納州，早年長期和祖父母住在新澤西，并在當地學習鋼琴。在他的學校期間轉向電吉他組樂隊，自此開始了民謠寫作。畢業后發表了第一張母帶，從此涉足民謠運動，參加各種大型公開活動獻唱。2001年發表的《Phantom Moon》中他與戲劇家兼詩人 Steve Sater合作，展示了他管弦樂的才華。2003年初他和Sater更合作了他們的音樂劇《復蘇的夏天》。濃厚的吉他明快略帶憂郁，聲線點滴有致。
