關于電影：
查爾斯·萊德作為故事的講述者同時也是故事的男主角，是牛津大學一個不知名學院的學生，他與出身豪門的塞巴斯蒂安·弗萊特在一次偶然的相遇中結為好友。之后，塞巴斯蒂安將查爾斯帶回他那富麗堂皇的家——布萊茲海德城堡之中，在那里查爾斯見到了塞巴斯蒂安的家人，包括他美麗的妹妹朱麗葉·弗萊特。
　　塞巴斯蒂安的家庭信仰天主教，而在塞巴斯蒂安母親的影響下，宗教對于他們整個家族都有著十分巨大的影響力。他們的生活和對話中充斥著天主教的內容。而這一切都讓查爾斯感到不可思議，因為對于他來說，天主教是既無實際內容又沒有高尚品德的東西，而這種信念又進一步在塞巴斯蒂安那控制欲強烈的狂熱天主教徒母親身上得到了加強。對于塞巴斯蒂安來說，宗教也不如酒精那樣能夠給他帶來超凡的解脫與快樂。于是，漸漸的塞巴斯蒂安開始酗酒成性。最終塞巴斯蒂安離開了布萊茲海德城堡，在外漂泊，一走就是兩年。塞巴斯蒂安的離開也間接的導致了查爾斯與弗萊特家族的生疏。
　　不過多年后，查爾斯的命運還是再一次與弗萊特家族牽扯到了一起。這一次，他與朱麗葉·弗萊特擦出了愛情的火花——盡管此時的朱麗葉已經是一個嫁給一個加拿大富商的有夫之婦了。查爾斯盤算著要和自己的妻子離婚，這樣他才能和朱麗葉結婚。然而，在兄長的勸服和父親病危的感召之下，朱麗葉越來越無法面對這份不合宗教倫理的愛，一種深深的負罪感讓她無法再想象自己和查爾斯的婚姻。同時，查爾斯也被朱麗葉父親臨終前涂油禮的厚重莊嚴所觸動，開始對這份愛產生了動搖。
